Exploring the Foundations of Research and Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy
Building on our Introduction to Research workshop, this session takes a deeper look at the philosophical foundations that shape how we understand and approach counselling and psychotherapy. Through an accessible exploration of ontology (the study of being) and epistemology (the study of knowledge), participants will reflect on the assumptions that underpin therapeutic theories, research methodologies, and clinical decision-making.
What You’ll Learn:
A clear and practical understanding of ontology and epistemology
How philosophical assumptions shape therapeutic approaches and research design
Ways to identify your own ontological and epistemological stance
Tools for integrating these insights into both research and practice
Opportunities for reflective discussion and application to client work
Who Is This Workshop For: This workshop is ideal for counselling and psychotherapy students, practitioners, and researchers who have completed our Introduction to Research workshop, or who want to deepen their engagement with the philosophical foundations of therapy and research.
Why Attend:
Strengthen your ability to design, evaluate, and apply research with greater depth
Develop reflective awareness of the philosophical assumptions shaping your practice
Gain confidence in engaging critically with theory, research, and methodology
